Project Facts

Role

Software Engineer (Backend)

Organization

Gannett / USA TODAY Network

Stack

Go • GraphQL • PostgreSQL • BigQuery • Looker Studio

Overview

Gannett consolidated newspapers from across the USA TODAY Network onto its proprietary enterprise publishing platform. I was part of the backend team (a separate frontend team owned the reader experience) that built the Go and GraphQL services behind the obituary content migration.

My Contribution

On the team, I wrote and tested data-transformation logic and validated migrated records with automated tests and GraphQL/PostgreSQL queries before production release. On my own, I took on the reporting problem: cleaning and deduplicating repeated and inconsistent records in BigQuery, then building Looker Studio reports across newspapers and time periods so the numbers could be trusted.
